We’ll just take it from there.”So, the door is cracked open for either Alex Tanney or Kyle Lauletta to play. The Giants haven’t, though, indicated they are ready to shove the 37-year-old Manning out that door and revoke his key card.Shurmur also said this: “He [Manning] is starting Monday. You roll with it how you want, with the idea that he’s going to get us on a run here and there will be no decisions to be made. In other words, part of the conversation was, we trust you, we want to work with you, and we trust the fact that you’re going to get in there and help us win football games.”Many in the fan base and media are done with Manning. Have, in fact, been done with Manning since long before the beginning of the 2018 season. Maybe the 37-year-old retires at the end of the season. Maybe the Giants do what they haven’t wanted to do, simply cut him, save the cap space and move on. All of those are within the realm of possibility. I still believe he can make the necessary throws, and I believe we have seen evidence of that this season. I believe the problem is in his decision-making, his hesitancy to throw at times and his haste to throw at others, both due to a lack of comfort in the pocket. Maybe the Giants wait and target someone from what now looks like a Day 2 group that includes Daniel Jones of Duke, Will Grier of West Virginia, Trace McSorley of Penn State and maybe a couple of others.Either way, the Giants are likely to need a “placeholder” quarterback in 2019. The Arizona Cardinals paid Sam Bradford $20 million to be that guy, and he earned $15 million of that for three games before being cut. They also paid Mike Glennon $8 million. Tyrod Taylor is making $16 million for watching Baker Mayfield play. Teddy Bridgewater, who hasn’t played a meaningful snap in three years, is making $6 million for wearing a baseball cap and enjoying watching the New Orleans Saints play every week.Point is, look at those numbers and look at that $17 million the Giants could “save” by cutting Manning. Unless they believe Lauletta can be their placeholder they are going to have to pay roughly that much to somebody to be their quarterback at the beginning of next season, and to be a mentor for whatever young quarterbacks they have on the roster.If they see enough progress on offense over the last half of the season, why couldn’t the highly-paid veteran they already have be that placeholder?Just a thought. Debuting a rookie who has no experience? Again, doesn’t seem like a situation that would set Lauletta up for success.That brings us to the final quarter of the season, games at Washington, vs. Tennessee, at Indianapolis and closing out the season vs. Dallas.Maybe facing the Redskins in Washington isn’t the best idea, either, especially if they are still fighting for the NFC East title.That brings us to the season’s final three games. Then on the sixth play of the drive, Kamara took a handoff right up the middle, thwarted a poor tackle attempt by Curtis Riley, and went 49 yards for a game-clinching touchdown with the final score of 33-18. The Carolina Panthers could get an offensive boost when they play the New York Giants. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that All-Pro tight end Greg Olsen might make his return from injury this Sunday.Olsen fractured his foot in the Panthers week one victory over the Dallas Cowboys. It was the same foot which had been surgically repaired following a Jones fracture at the start of the 2017 season. Olsen managed to avoid surgery and the injured reserve and his return could provide a major boost to a Panthers passing offense which as relied heavily on running back Christian McCaffrey. If he is able to return this week and be anything like the Greg Olsen with whom the NFL has become familiar, that would be bad news for a Giants’ defense which has been 22nd in the league against tight ends. The good news, for the Giants anyway, is that risk of re-injury makes a week six return more likely for Olsen. As well as the fact that foot injuries can be problematic for receivers, and the original fracture is similar to the ones once suffered by Hakeem Nicks and Dez Bryant. That being said, it would be foolish for the defense to plan for anything other than Olsen to be playing and at full strength.

They also brought Jack Heneghan back in for a tryout, per NFL reporter Howard Balzer. He spent 2018 training camp with the team, so it might have been more just getting on the same page to see where he’s at physically being out of football the first five weeks of the season. If the 49ers sign Heneghan, it will be to the practice squad.The 49ers have a couple days to sort through what they want to do next. Since they are playing on Monday instead of Sunday, their first practice is not until Thursday. Any outside additions will happen by then, while practice squad promotions will not happen until the weekend. They don’t have a lot of spots to clear players, which could leave defensive end Ryan Delaire potentially on the outside looking in. The 49ers promoted him this past week to help with the pass rush, and he was active over interior defensive tackle D.J. Jones. But he had no chance to play that position in the NFL, despite 22 receiving touchdowns in college, because he’s 6’ 1”.Fullbacks are disappearing from the NFL, because GMs don’t want to give a precious roster slot to someone unlikely to touch the ball. The job is being divvied up between running backs (5’9” to 6’2”) and tight ends (6’4 to 6’7”), but blocking is a secondary skill at both positions. “Move” tight ends — i.e. big guys who can’t block — are increasingly common, and no one expects an RB to lead block on running plays. Running backs are supposed to protect the quarterback in passing situations (third down) while providing a check down receiving option, but again neither skill is their primary job requirement and a lot of them aren’t that good at one or both of them.Because of his height, Juszczyk is a “tweener,” in between the ideal size for two different positions, and NFL talent scouts hate tweeners. While it obviously makes the week less interesting, the upside is that the perpetually injured roster will be allowed some extra time to heal up - in fact, the 49ers are expected to have a completely healthy roster for the first time this season following the bye.Tonight’s TNF game is a fairly solid one, although the nostalgia factor carries much of the weight. The Seahawks and Packers are two teams, perhaps the best examples of which, that can salvage any game at any time for a stunning comeback victory. They’ve certainly both broken our hearts in the very recent past with unbelievable fourth quarter heroics, and, famously Youth Mike Person Jersey , they’ve done it to each other. Since 2012, the teams have played six times, splitting the record with one blowout each, an overtime victory in the Seahawks favor in the 2015 NFC Championship Game, and, of course, 2012’s infamous “Fail Mary” decision which gifted the upstart Seahawks a controversial last-second victory and brought the replacement referee situation to the absolute forefront of NFL conversations.Currently, the Packers are 4-4-1, and the Seahawks are 4-5 - a far cry from their recent successes, but dangerous teams nevertheless. Which player stands to lose out on a bad performance tonight and which one can make the roster with a big game?Player with the most to lose - RB Shaun WilsonWilson has had a great camp and has shown why the coaching staff has talked him up during the summer. With Charles Sims heading to IR, Wilson hasn’t had a better chance than now to make the active roster. But Dare Ogunbowale has made some plays during the preseason as well. If Wilson has a bad night or succumbs to injury, then Ogunbowale could fill the fourth running back spot or the Bucs could decide to carry three backs into the season and use Wilson’s potential roster spot elsewhere.How many running backs do the Bucs’ plan on carrying for the season? They came into 2017 with just three on the roster, which doesn’t bode well for Wilson. Tampa Bay will be forced to carry three quarterbacks into the season due to Jameis Winston’s suspension and that also takes away a potential roster spot for Wilson.Injuries in both the offensive and defensive trenches will affect Koetter’s and Licht’s decision as to how many backs they need as well. Jackson will be used in more ways this year, including from the slot, which will give defenses headaches. Humphries and Watson will perform when their numbers are called. 2. Defensive LineAfter having one of the worst defensive lines in football last season, it was obvious that the position needed to be addressed in more ways than one, and it was. Outside of Gerald McCoy, William Gholston and Noah Spence, Jason Licht cleaned house and brought in fresh new faces all along the defensive line, not just at one specific position. Cameron Brate is coming offanother strong season in which he continued to prove he is a legitimate red zone threat, and O.J. Howard is on the cusp of becoming one of the league’s most feared tight ends from not only a receiving standpoint, but from a blocking standpoint as well. The two can become as dangerous as Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski were for the Patriots. The Buccaneers also have Anthony Auclair, who is heading into his second season and continues to make strides in earning playing time. During the preseason, you saw him getting a decent amount of snaps with the starters, so that’s something to keep an eye on. He is a better run blocker then Brate, so it makes sense to have him and Howard in the gameon two tight end sets. Alan Cross is another guy who is extremely valuable to this team and can really do anything they ask.
