TOKYO NBilliga ike Air Max 90 Herr , Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Researchers from the University of Tokyo in Japan accidentally discovered a new type of glass that can heal itself from breaks when pressed by hand at room temperature.


A graduate student found the material during an experiment, when he intended to use it as glue, but finally got a sheet of glass that could be healed after being pressed together by hand without heat to melt it.


The researchers said the new material is the first hard substance of its kind that can be healed at room temperature.


"I hope the repairable glass becomes a new environment-friendly material that avoids the need to be thrown away if broken," the graduate student Yu Yanagisawa told local media.


It was also found via further experimentation that the new polymer glass could regain its original strength after a couple of hours.


This is not the first time a polymer has been suggested as a healable screen for devices such as smartphones. If this new type of glass goes into production for smartphones, bearing a shattered phone would be a thing of the past.

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- State has been granted an appeal on South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius conviction Tuesday.


However, the state was not given the permission to appeal against the five year sentence handed down to the Paralympian.


Pistorius was convicted in September on a lesser charge of culpable homicide. Pistorius is serving a five year term after found guilty of shooting his girlfriend Reeva Stennkemp at his home last year on Valentine's Day.


He said he mistaken her girlfriend as a treacherous intruder.


State indicated it would appeal for the conviction and sentence after Pistorius was sentenced for five years, the state believes it is inappropriate.


A spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority told reporters outside court: ""Our argument was that [Pistorius] should have been convicted of murder, and then would have been sentenced to a minimum sentence of 15 years. That is, of course, what we would like to happen. It isn't about winning - it's about justice.""


Judge Thokozile Masipa shed light on the arguments of whether the prosecutors in Pistorius case allowed appealing her verdict and sentence Pistorius who was laid charges of murder of her girlfriend.


Prosecutors told reporters that things can ""take time"" at the appeal stage and Pistorius could even be out of jail by the time the appeal is scheduled.
