Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay has overtaken Senator Grace Poe as the top contender to win presidential elections next year in an opinion poll published on Tuesday.


The survey of 1,800 people, conducted by independent pollster Pulse Asia, showed 33 percent of voters supported Binay, a former human rights lawyer and the most experienced politician among the presidential hopefuls, compared with 23 percent who backed the tough-talking, Davao city mayor Rodrigo Duterte.


The poll was conducted between December 4 to 11. Binay was seen as the most likely winner of the 2016 presidential race until June, when opinion polls showed he was overtaken by Poe.


A survey published by another pollster, Social Weather Station, on December 7 showed Duterte as the favourite to succeed President Benigno Aquino.


This month, the Commission on Elections disqualified Poe because she failed to meet a 10-year residency requirement.


The May election is being closely watched by investors, who fear the political succession could derail the economic growth and efforts to crack down on graft made during Aquino's rule.


SAO PAULO, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton (United Kingdom) and Nico Rosberg (Germany) looked fierce on the track on Friday after finishing with the fastest times ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix which will take place on Sunday in Sao Paulo (southeast) as part of the Formula One (F1) World Championship 2015.？


In the first practice session, the 30-year-old Brit took the lead with a time of one minute 13.543 seconds per lap. Rosberg was hot on Hamilton's heels with a time of one minute 14.620 seconds.？


In this session German Sebastian Vettel from Ferrari registered third with a time of one minute 14.168 seconds and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) came in almost one second off the pace.？


However in the second practice session the tables were turned and Rosberg finished faster than Hamilton by almost half a second.？


Hamilton told local media his aim is to win on the track at Interlagos (Sao Paulo). This track holds special memories for the Brit as it was on this track where, in 2008, Hamilton won his first title despite coming fifth place in the race.？


After eight years competing, Hamilton has still to win a race in the South American country, the home of deceased driver Ayrton Senna whom the English competitor admired.？


"It is one of the tracks that I still have not won on and if I am able to change this at the weekend then it will be in honour of Senna and another high point in this marvellous year," said Hamilton.？


The Brit remembered that Senna himself also took eight years to win the Brazilian Grand Prix.？


However, as the track's defending champion, Rosberg is not expected to make the race easy for his team-mate.？？




MOGADISHU， June 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 30，000 displaced people are in need of humanitarian assistance after flooding in Somalia's south-central region of Beletweyne， the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said.


Albert Jabre， the region's field coordinator for ICRC Somalia， on Friday said the displaced people were in need of food and safe drinking water.


"This flooding is the worst in years. It covered most of the town and surroundings. As the people move to higher grounds， they are in need of everything，"Jabre said in a statement.


"The ICRC is providing food and other basic items， clean water and health care to the most affected communities. This will enable them to hold on as they start to rebuild their homes，" he added.


The ICRC and Somali Red Cross Society this week carried out a five-day distribution of rice， oil， beans， blankets and mosquito nets for the displaced people.


About 100，000 water purification tablets were distributed， with each family receiving 20 tablets， enough to be used for one month. One tablet can purify 20 litres of drinking water.


Beletweyne hosts about 31，000 displaced people， most of whom have fled conflict in the neighboring districts of Jalalqsi and Bulle Burte.


Local residents who lived in low-lying areas have moved to higher ground in El Jaale， 5 km from Beletweyne， due to the flooding.


The flood is a result of heavy rains in the upper part of the Ethiopian highlands that have caused river Shabelle to overflow.


Shafi Ibrahim， a local elder， said the flood has destroyed crops and that many fields remain inaccessible.


"The flood has destroyed almost everything. The majority of the community here operates a small business in a local market. They could no longer work as the place is submerged with water. We do hope in a month's time it will dry up and we can start rebuilding our lives，" said Ibrahim.


There have been fears about the outbreak of diseases， such as diarrhea， cholera and typhoid， following the flooding.
