Romo was expected to sit out a competitive practice for the first time at training camp Tuesday, although coach Jason Garrett said it wasnt because of any setbacks from surgery for a herniated disk in late December. Garrett says the Cowboys are making daily decisions on workload, and Romo is in on them as well. Executive vice-president Stephen Jones said it was the 34-year-old quarterbacks idea to skip Fridays full practice, which was lighter work without pads. Romo did all the competitive work in the first two practices with pads Saturday and Sunday. The team was off Monday, and Romo was part of the morning walkthrough session earlier Tuesday. "Theres an old adage in football, a day off can be really valuable, two days off can be life changing," Garrett said. "So when you get in this kind of a situation, we had yesterday off, got some good work this morning in the walkthrough, some mental work of some of the different situations were working on." Romo injured his back against Washington last season but stayed in and threw a game-winning touchdown pass. He had surgery two days before the Cowboys lost to Philadelphia with Kyle Orton at quarterback in a season-ending loss that kept Dallas out of the playoffs. After being held out of competitive situations throughout the off-season, Romo was declared ready for camp. But the Cowboys have been cautious by limiting his throws. Tuesdays break is the most significant cutback so far. "The biggest thing we talked to Tony about and really all of our players about, is honest feedback," Garrett said. "We recognize that youre a tough player. I saw what you did against the Redskins last year. You just got to tell us how youre doing, how its going and make sure we handle it the right way each and every day." Garrett said the feedback from Romo has been "good." "But we just have to monitor him," the coach said. "Weve just got to make sure we dont overdo the reps ... just be mindful of where he is each and every day." The surgery in December was the second procedure on Romos back in eight months. He had a cyst removed before the start of off-season practices last year and didnt do any significant work until training camp. This year, Romo tried to sneak into a competitive drill during minicamp in June, and Garrett kicked him out of the huddle. "Its the same approach we take here," Garrett said. "Lets keep taking incremental steps. Part of getting ready for that is practicing in training camp, part of getting ready for that is playing in preseason games. The leagues general managers and coaches voted for Reinhart over Western Conference finalist Mitch Holmberg, a 62-goal scorer for the Spokane Chiefs. Reinhart set a franchise record for assists in a season with 69 and, combined with 36 goals in 60 games, the 18-year-old from Vancouver tied for fourth in WHL scoring. But the son of former NHL defenceman Paul Reinhart was a stellar two-way player for the Ice with a plus-24 rating. He posted a torrid 48 points in 22 games from Dec. 4 to Feb. 28. Central Scouting ranks Reinhart third among North American skaters for the NHL draft, up from fourth in Januarys midterm rankings. The Four Broncos Trophy that goes to the player of the year is given in memory of four Swift Current Broncos who died in a team bus crash in 1986. Reinhart, six foot one and 186 pounds, also earned the WHLs sportsmanlike award for his paltry 11 minutes in penalties. "Both of those awards say a lot about his character," Ice coach Ryan McGill said. "Mitch Holmberg is one heck of a player, but Sam is the complete package. He is the smartest player in the Western Hockey League not only with the puck, but without the puck." Reinharts brother Griffin is an Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman who was drafted fourth overall by the New York Islanders two years ago. Sam and Griffin both played for the Canadian team that finished fourth in the world junior hockey championship in Malmo, Sweden, in January. Sam was a dominant player upon his return to the Ice. "It was a good year individually and as a team," Sam said. "I think our depth really showed in the second half and ultimately made it easier on me to produce offensively."
